Horatio is the fourth character in my series for Vincent's nursery, after Duncan the Duckling [link] Simon the Stoat [link] and Geraldine the Giraffe [link]


Horatio is a well mannered, but very determined little boy hippo. He comes from a long line of Olympic swimmers, but has decided to break with tradition and fulfill his dream of becoming a sumo wrestler.

Now, we know hippos have sensitive skin and can't stay out of the water for long. Which is why Horatio has pioneered the new sport of underwater sumo and is hero worshipped by hundreds of young hippos who want to be just like him.


(little known fact: I love sumo and my favourite is Takanohana.)

I would have dearly loved to give Horatio a shikona, but my knowledge of Japanese is non existent and I didn't want to steal one from a real rikishi. If anyone can give a hand and name Horatio for me, I'd be ever so happy!

This is, as per usual, pencil (2B to 5B) on extra smooth Bristol board, 8 x 8 cm. I.e. tiny. And cute, if you will.

Baby hippos are so adorable! They look almost like wet, hairless guinnapigs, which is actually quite strange, but so cute.
Sumo wrestler hairstyle? Haha. Don't you find it strange how humans are the only ones with long hair on our heads, and still people draw long hair on other animals? I used to do it when I was younger...on bears. :aww: Oh well.
It looks amazing though. As..always.
